Engineers Week 2022

We’re celebrating Engineers Week with a special highlights post, featuring some of our talented engineers. The Koddi team consists of the sharpest, brightest minds in the business. This includes an engineering team that makes up nearly 50% of our staff, all of whom are committed to exceeding clients’ expectations, staying ahead of the ever-evolving adtech industry, and building innovative industry-leading tech solutions.

Read on to meet some of the team!

Why did you choose engineering as your career?

I started doing hobby projects like making games in my teens because I loved playing games so much. I read a ton of game development books, learned python, and c++. Then I started writing DirectX and OpenGL game engines. This led me to choosing to go to college for software engineering.

What does an average day look like for you?

I wake up because my 10 month old son is summoning me for his breakfast bottle. While he’s eating I sit on the couch reading news, studying, or learning something new in my field by reading an article. Around 9 I hand my son to the baby sitter and start looking into my Jira tickets and slack messages. Then it’s coding and communication the rest of the day until 5pm where I go back to studying for my MBA.

What is the most exciting thing about being an engineer?

There are always new problems to solve, and make a career for yourself by doing it. I still get excited and my heart beats faster when I get to be a part of solving a high impact and important novel problem.

What is the best piece of advice you have for someone looking to become an engineer?

I’ve never been a fan of ‘fake it till you make it’ in engineering. Instead be honest about your skill/knowledge level, so you can always work on your weaker areas. Improve those first then reevaluate. Also, social skills are what will define your upward mobility as much as your engineering skill.

Why did you choose engineering as your career?

In school I was great at math, so I knew I wanted to do some engineering. Just for fun I took a computer fundamentals course in school. It sparked my interest to see what I could do with some simple lines of codes. In spite of the many countless times sitting in front of the computer screen trying to figure out how to solve a problem, those “Aha” moments were more precious and exciting for me. From there I knew I wanted to pursue my career in computer engineering.

What does an average day look like for you?

I start my day around 8:30 AM after dropping my kids at school. I am a morning person and try to finish important things in the morning. Typically, I’m working on multiple things in parallel, so I have to prioritize working on what I think is most important. This could be any design and discussion of new features, code reviews, etc.

What is the most exciting thing about being an engineer?

What I like about engineering is, you get to tackle real problems and find the best solutions. Every working day is different and that keeps life exciting and challenging. For me learning is very important; engineering gives me plenty of opportunities to learn and grow myself every day.

What is the best piece of advice you have for someone looking to become an engineer?

Initially focus on gaining and developing in-demand skills, and on getting exciting projects in which you learn loads of things. Accept reasonable challenges that enhance your skills. Lastly, don’t fear failure but learn from it.

Why did you choose engineering as your career?

I joined a computer science class out of curiosity and found out I was good at it. Several years later and now here we are.

What does an average day look like for you?

I wake up to an annoying alarm. I take an extremely long walk from my bed to my desk. Eat some cereal. Join our stand up meeting. Attend various meetings, and in between all those meetings I try to get some work done. At the end of the day, I like to play some video games and spend time with my wife and 3 dogs.

What is the most exciting thing about being an engineer?

Solving problems. I like when something seems difficult or even impossible as it brings out the best in me.

What is the best piece of advice you have for someone looking to become an engineer?

Be resourceful. You will not always know the answer and that’s ok. Dig into what you do know and let that guide you to the resources you need to solve the problem.

Why did you choose engineering as your career?

I chose to be an  engineer because I thought it would be a lot of fun. I love to ask questions which I do not understand, or find difficult to understand. If you like to question, explore, invent, and create, then engineering could be your best career option. As engineers, we are constantly changing the world with inventions and solutions that affect everyone’s lives. People have issues in their day-to-day lives, and engineers are the ones who can invent solutions for them.

What does an average day look like for you?

Meet team to have a short standup. Give status updates on my work and listen to others updates. Raise blockers to my progress if any. After standup, help someone if they need my feedback from the team. Run tests and provide results to the appropriate teams. Write test conditions and test cases. Run test cases (manual, automated or both). Discover bugs and report. Retest.

What is the most exciting thing about being an engineer?

A great part about being an engineer is the troubleshooting and problem solving aspect. Engineers are trained to look at problems more analytically and then break those problems down into smaller sections so that the issue can be isolated and resolved. We have the power to make a difference to the world. We work with other talented people. We have lots of options to work in any field, and find work easily. We have job security.

What is the best piece of advice you have for someone looking to become an engineer?

The best piece of advice I’ve been given is to take things one step at a time. Making mistakes and learning from them is the best way to be successful, but you also have to give it your best no matter what the situation. Make sure you have the mathematical and technical talent to pursue a degree in engineering. Take interest in the latest/existing technology and try to solve the problems using it.
